Video: Inside the Mind of an American Family

Andrew Solomon and Robert Kolker discuss Kolker’s new book, Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family. Hidden Valley Road tells the story of the Galvin family, a large Colorado family of boys born during the baby boom a majority of whom, by the mid-1970s, were diagnosed with schizophrenia. Hidden Valley Road documents the history of the science of schizophrenia, from the era of institutionalization, lobotomy, and the schizophrenogenic mother to the search for genetic markers for the disease. This event was sponsored by the Family Action Network. Recorded March 10, 2021.
