Video: ‘A Dangerous Son’ Chronicles Children With Mental Illness


Andrew Solomon is featured in Liz Garbus’s documentary A Dangerous Son, which follows three children with mental illness and their families’ struggles to secure help for them. Other interviewees include Thomas Insel, former director of the National Institute of Mental Health; Virginia state senator Creigh Deeds, whose 24-year-old son Gus stabbed him before killing himself; and Liza Long, author of the essay “I Am Adam Lanza’s Mother,” about her experiences as mother of a son with bipolar disorder. A Dangerous Son premieres on HBO on May 7, and will also be available on HBO On Demand, HBO NOW, HBO GO, and partners’ streaming platforms.
