While Earl Spencer took his place next to Princes William and Harry at the Wembley tribute to Diana, a very different party was being held at the Princess’s ancestral home. I can reveal the Althorp estate in Northamptonshire hosted its first-ever civil partnership at the weekend when a wealthy gay couple from the U.S. were ‘married’ in a lavish ceremony.

The grooms — author Andrew Solomon and John Habich, the culture editor of U.S. paper Newsday — flew in 300 friends for the two-day extravaganza. …
