ICONIST: Haben Sie Sorge, dass Ihren Kindern mit Vorurteilen begegnet wird?
Solomon: Mein Sohn hat berichtet, dass ein Mitschüler – seine Nemesis – ihn damit ärgert, dass er zwei Väter hat. Wenn wir zur Schule gingen, gäbe es für diesen Jungen scharfe Konsequenzen, aber das erscheint uns zu sehr als Nuklearwaffe. Es ist auch wichtig, dass unser Sohn versteht, dass es Menschen gibt, die unsere Lebensweise ablehnen. Wenn wir ihn fragen, ob er lieber in einer Mutter-Vater-Kind-Familie leben würde, sagt er: „Wenn ich eine Mutter und einen Vater hätte, würde einer von euch fehlen, und das würde mich sehr traurig machen.“
ICONIST: Are you worried that your children will experience prejudice?
Solomon: My son has reported that a classmate — his nemesis — is annoyed that he has two dads. If we brought this to the attention of the school, there would be sharp consequences for this boy, but that seems like overkill. It is also important for our son to understand that there are people who reject our way of life. When we ask him if he would rather live in a mother-father-child family, he says, “If I had a mother and a father, one of you would be missing, and that would make me very sad.”
