We find him facing down tanks with a band of Russian artists in 1981; on the quest of a rare bird in Zambia in 1998; in Greenland in 2001, researching the high incidence of depression among the Inuit; in Afghanistan as the Taliban fell in 2002; and in Myanmar in 2014, meeting ex-political prisoners. His writing is never less than deeply perceptive writing, and wonderfully humane.
