In our Bookshelf series, we ask journalists, writers, scientists, curators and other heroines about their literary preferences and publications that occupy an important place on their bookshelves. Today, biochemist-immunologist and scientific employee of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI nanobioengineering laboratory Svetlana Bozrova shares stories about her favorite books.

The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression

«I would call this book a desktop reference for all who have experienced mental illness. I once struggled with depression, and for me, this book was like a breath of fresh air. It helps to realize that you are not alone and that your struggle is not a war with dark spirits. The book covers all aspects of depression: each chapter describes one aspect, such as “Treatment” or “Failures”. For me, the most important discovery was that one must accept one’s illness, otherwise it cannot be defeated. Do not give in, but accept your depression as a given. And be prepared for the fact that depression can return, but now not as something terrible and bearing unbearable suffering, but as a difficult old acquaintance with whom you have already learned to communicate.»
