Q&A with Andrew Solomon: ‘I was turned down by 15 schools because they said I’d never read or write’

Financial Times

What was your childhood or earliest ambition?
Writing was always the driving interest.

Ambition or talent: which matters more to success?
The more talent you have, the more your ambition matters.

How politically committed are you?
Passionately and desperately. We live in an anguished world and our political leadership is doing nothing about it. I am in various groups and on boards, but I don’t know if I’m making a difference.

If your 20-year-old self could see you now, what would he think?
What I most wanted was to have a family and also maintain my integrity. I felt I had to choose. If I had known both were possible, the reassurance would have spared me years of sorrow, depression, anguish and suffering.
