‘I have less hope today than before,’ says writer Andrew Solomon
…O foco do filme são famílias que superaram feridas e tabus para viver em harmonia. Os finais são felizes. “Longe da Árvore” é uma obra que fala da vitória do amor sobre a rejeição, do preconceito sobre a intolerância. Batalhas que estão sendo travadas na arena pública.
“Ao mesmo tempo que vemos avanços, vemos racismo, homofobia, antissemitismo e outras formas de preconceito sendo amplamente aceitas e até incentivadas implícita ou explicitamente por governos”, diz Solomon.
Se ele tem esperança? “Eu tenho menos esperança hoje do que há cinco anos. A feiura da humanidade tem sido exibida com orgulho, e a opinião de que íamos na direção do respeito e da gentileza é difícil de sustentar hoje.”
“Famílias têm a função de mediar a existência do indivíduo diante do mundo. E o tipo de famílias sobre as quais escrevi e que estão no filme são as que destroem a crueldade do mundo pedacinho por pedacinho, dia a dia. Eu acredito nisso.”
The film focuses on families that have overcome wounds and taboos to live in harmony. The endings are happy. Far From the Tree is a work that speaks of the victory of love over rejection, prejudice and intolerance — all battles being fought in the public arena.
“At the same time that we see progress, we see racism, homophobia, antisemitism and other forms of prejudice being widely accepted and even implicitly or explicitly encouraged by governments,” says Solomon.
The ugliness of mankind has been proudly displayed, and the view that we were moving toward respect and kindness is hard to sustain today.”
“Families have the function of mediating the existence of the individual before the world. And the kind of families I wrote about that are in the movie are the ones that destroy the cruelty of the world piece by piece, day by day. I believe that.”
