Seus livros O Demônio do Meio-Dia e Longe da Árvore são introspectivos. Já Lugares Distantes volta o olhar para fora, e para o outro, tendo como ponto de partida seus relatos de viagens. Por que publicá-lo agora?
Vivemos numa época em que barreiras estão sendo erguidas por toda parte, com Donald Trump falando da construção de um muro entre os Estados Unidos e o México, e o Brexit levantando um muro virtual entre o Reino Unido e o resto da Europa. Precisamos, mais do que nunca, de internacionalismo, dessa habilidade de nos engajar em outras culturas para compreender o que significa viver no mundo.
Your books The Noonday Demon and Far from the Tree are introspective. Far and Away is retrospective, taking as its starting point your travel accounts. Why publish it now?
We live in a time when barriers are being erected everywhere, with Donald Trump talking about building a wall between the United States and Mexico, and Brexit erecting a virtual wall between the UK and the rest of Europe. We need, more than ever, internationalism, the ability to engage in other cultures to understand what it means to live in the world.
